When people are looking for information typically they want it as fast as possible… Instantly is best. It’s the year 2010. When someone in your local area jumps onto a search engine to search for someone providing your services who do you want them to find…?

You…? Or One Of Your Competitors…?

While it may be the year 2010 it’s still staggering how many contractors really don’t think they need a website… The most common line is “I am already too busy, I don’t need anymore work…” or “it’s too expensive”

If you’re competing against other contractors who HAVE websites then you’re losing business to them guaranteed.I’ll say it again… When someone in your area needs a contractors services I will almost guarantee you the majority of them will go online and start their search there. They want to find the information they are seeking instantly or as fast as possible.

The phone book can be time consuming to get out and look you up… If you’re even listed. Yellow Page ads cannot provide close to the level of information that even the most simple of websites can at a fraction of the cost.

Does it mean cancel your Yellow Page ad? No… It means maybe get a smaller one with your new website address. The money you save on Yellow Pages will probably pay for your website. And when potential clients find you they will be able to learn about you and what you do immediately by going to your website.

Let me ask you… How much time do you waste in a day answering some of the simple yet commonly asked questions associated with your business?

Probably a lot more then you like… A website makes it easy for your clients and potential clients to get their questions answered 24 hours a day. Your cell phone doesn’t need to ring endlessly and you can spend more time on the activities that produce your income.

Purchasing your domain name is a fairly straight forward deal… Choosing the right one for your business isn’t all that tricky either, yet so many people royally screw it up and let one of their competitors scoop the best name for their local area.

The first domain you want to purchase is your company name. For example.

“ABC Contracting” = www.ABCContracting.Com
“Johns Drywall Co.” = www.JohnsDrywallCo.com
“Bills Plumbing Service” = www.BillsPlumbingService.Com

This is what you’ll be using for your business cards and everything else you do.

Here’s the kicker… And where everybody screws it up.

Let me ask you a question first…?

If you were new to your area, maybe you’ve lived there quite a while… You needed a Plumber to come and do some work at your home. If you wanted to find a plumbing contractor instantly you’d most likely start your search on the Internet.

Let’s say for example you lived in Victoria… What do you think the first thing you’ll type into a search engine will be…?

“Victoria BC Plumber” or “Victoria Plumbing Contractor”

You’re not going to type in Bills Plumbing Service… At this point in your search you don’t even know who they are!!!

If someone owned the domain name “victoriabcplumber.com” the search engines would be taking notice of the website as an important local resource. It’s quite likely you would find them first.

So what am I getting at…?

Be the first in your area to wrap up your services in a dot com name.

Example… You live in Duncan BC. And own a local roofing business…

DonsRoofing.Com (Company Name)
DuncanRoofingContractor.Com (Internet Marketing Name)

Now your website is going to stand a better chance at being found by local searchers looking for a “Duncan Roofing Contractor.” And if that’s what they searched for… And your site popped up close to the top if not first, WHO do you think they are going to check out first…?

It’s not rocket science… It’s a really simple and often overlooked local Internet Marketing strategy. This is something you could be taking advantage of. It’s first come, first serve… Once the name is taken there is likely little chance they (your competitor) will let it go…

So are you going to wrap up the names for your area or are you going to let your competitors do it first?

Mistake #1. Home Built Websites – Don’t get me wrong… It’s okay to design and build your own website but it’s going to look like you’ve built it yourself.

This may not be a good thing. Commonly people will try to use a free online site builder such as homestead or freewebs. This does not look very professional and your site is usually riddled with 3rd party advertisements until you pay to upgrade. Sites4Contractors offers several pre-built templates so all you need to do is add your own text and pictures. These are templates specifically designed with contractors in mind.

Mistake #2. No Virtual Handshake - When a potential client lands on your website they will probably want to learn a little more about you. I call this a “virtual handshake”. It’s just a simple page that talks a little about you, your experience, and the services you offer. It’s a great way to build rapport with potential clients before you’ve ever spoken to them. If somebody Knows, Likes & Trusts you there is a really good chance you’ll be able to earn their business. There are too many contractors websites out there that lack this basic necessity. Think about it… If you were walking onto a potential clients jobsite for the first time would you wear a paper bag over your head…? Most likely not… Don’t treat your website any differently.

Mistake #3. Not Enough Pictures – When a potential client is perusing through your website nothing speaks louder about the quality of your work then pictures of past projects. In this day and age almost everyone has a digital camera so there should be no reason why you couldn’t have 5,10 or even 20 pictures on your site to showcase your work to others. No need to pack a binder full of pictures to hand people, let your website do the talking. You’ll save more time.  Remember… When someone is looking for a contractor, they aren’t really looking for a contractor… What they really want is a nicer bathroom, a bigger and brighter kitchen, a finished basement, you get the idea…  Show your potential clients the results!

Mistake #4. Lack Of Details - It’s important that your website be able to answer many of the simple and common questions you get asked on a daily basis. In order to do this you need to gather up some details about your services.

Who is your crew?
What do you charge on average?
What is your experience/credentials/certification?
What specific services do you provide?
What is the average time to complete a specific job?

These are just some of the questions that could be easily answered on your website. Sadly many contractor websites are nothing more then a contact me page… No details, No pictures, or if there is provisions it’s almost never updated!

Mistake #5. Poor Marketing - This is probably the most critically import mistake you want to avoid. Designs studios can charge you $1000’s for a really nice looking website but then you still need to get people to see it if you want to generate any business.

Many design studios offer search engine optimization packages that once again cost many $1000’s of dollars.

If you want your website to generate fresh new business then you MUST be found in the search engines for local searches related to the services you provide. For Example. If you’re a plumber serving the Duncan, BC area you want to make darn sure when someone hops onto Google, Yahoo or MSN and types in “Duncan BC Plumber” you show up somewhere on the first page.

Make your website easy to find for potential clients in your local area and you’ll start generating more business as a result.
